Writing to you from my new apartment where I now live alone for the first time in...seven years! Wowza. The place is a mess and the heat doesn't quite work right yet (and will hopefully be fixed) but I'm here and it's home now, and I'm officially out of multi-city limbo. I'm bundled up on the sofa with a cashmere throw and my netbook and watching the Food Network on my new HDTV. HD makes everyone look a lot less attractive.
On to fandom stuff: sometimes being in this fandom brings unexpected gifts. On NYE, I was gifted with this going-away gift from my buddy
seventeen76: Pon Farr Perfume! It's a little strong but actually smells really nice. Now if I only there were a single Vulcan living in my new building.
And, what the hell, I did this, too.
This year I wrote and posted:
(Some of these mentions are background pairings in fics.)
For STXI:
Kirk/McCoy - 9 (includes one McCoy/girl!Kirk and one Kirk/girl!McCoy)
Chekov/Sulu - 4
Kirk/Sulu - 3
Kirk/Uhura - 3
McCoy/Uhura - 3
McCoy/Sulu - 2
For RPF:
Chris/Zach - 14
Chris/Karl - 8
Anton/John - 4
Chris/John - 3
Chris/Zoe - 3
Anton/Zach - 2
John/Karl - 2
Karl/Zach - 2
Chris/Karl/Zach - 1
Anton/Bruce - 1
Anton/Karl - 1
John/Zoe - 1
Karl/Natalie - 1
Zach/OFC - 1
Overall thoughts:
I seem to really enjoy this Chris Pine character.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Considering that I started the year with zero desire to return to fandom, a lot more! Stupid amazing movie, inspiring me or whatever!
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
All of them, hahaha. I guess Anton/Bruce and McCoy/Sulu are the most "out there" pairings that I've attempted, whatever that might mean.
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Oh, boy. Chekov and Sulu Go to White Castle, my first STXI fic, still makes me laugh when I read it. Otherwise it's probably a tie between Cherry Lips and Disco Stick.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I probably took fewer risks than I used to, in that I stopped posting WIPs before I was actually finished with them. If writing rare pairings is a risk, then I took that risk. I also indulged in a lot of, uh...blasphemy. But I'm Jewish, so whatever. :)
My best story of this year:
Hard to say. I definitely felt a bit of pride upon finishing fics like Apocalypso (which taught me the value, limitations and potential of songfic as I was writing it), Disco Stick and Fiesta del tres, but I'm also really proud of a lot of my ficlets because one of my favorite challenges is conveying as much as I can with as few words as possible. Some of my favorite ficlets include Don't You Dare Speak, Between Gentlemen and If You Should Fall.
My most popular story of this year:
Definitely my Urbine fic Disco Stick (aka Karl Can't Dance or the Lady GaGa Chronicles).
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I had kiiiind of hoped for more feedback on my ten-part Pinto fic Apocalypso, but I understand that at the time I was relatively new on the ST RPF scene, and the fic also dealt with themes that a lot of people probably aren't comfortable with or interested in reading. That being said, I'm extremely grateful for all the kind feedback I did get for it, because it took me a long time to write and ended up going in all sorts of directions I didn't expect. (When I started it, all I wanted was evil!Zach and he ended up surprising me with his depths.)
Most fun story to write:
Probably either Supraliminal or Rest My Chemistry, for all the fun interview research it involved. Actually, Man Crush was rad, too.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Call me a kinky girl, but I'm going to go with Cherry Lips.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
The Catholic Schoolboy RPF AU series has a lot of filthy, dirty, wrong stuff in it. Sex in a confessional booth, sex with a priest, sex in a classroom...that thing has it all. And I know I've taken a hiatus from it, mainly to write this other AU I recently finished, but I will be doing more of this series, don't worry.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Apocalypso.
Hardest story to write:
Smug. I wrote a completely different fic before scrapping it and ending up with the resulting story. It was a good exercise, though, because I adore John (if you couldn't tell) and it was interesting to write him as the John I know and love while also making him a bit of an asshole.
Biggest Disappointment:
I'm not super disappointed with anything I've written, but if I had to pick a fic that I'm not sure really works in retrospect, it'd probably be Treat You Right. I did my best to make sure that Zoe came off as strong and independent in that fic and I'm not confident I entirely succeeded.
Biggest Surprise:
I was really surprised by the amount of comments The Bestest got, since it's just PG crack/fluff. But hey, people like their fluff! I also jumped the gun on declaring the response to Knockout as slim to none; it ended up getting a really, really nice and rewarding response, considering it's such a rare pairing.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
I'm not sure, but I was told the other day that Disco Stick proves I'm secretly a marshmallow under my bitter and jaded exterior.
My fic writing goals for 2010:
Just to write as much as I can without letting it interfere with all the new twists and turns in my life, until it gets old or dull. So far, it hasn't! Mostly thanks to you all. :)
